I think back to my first year out of college, buying items for the office based on price and what I *thought* was expected of my wardrobe and ended up looking like…well, a collage graduate. If I were to give advice to my 22 year-old self and to those now entering the workforce, it would be to focus on fabric and fit.
The key to looking professional is have something well tailored and for the material to feel good and look expensive. Fortunately, looking expensive doesn’t mean it has to be expensive. The new line of suiting at Banana Republic this season have a wonderful fit and flare silhouette. I think it’s better than what they have offered in the past and for about $140 for a dress in basic black, it can be worn with a blazer, cardigan, or go solo in the summer months. I just wish they hadn’t restricted this particular dress I am wearing from all their great promotions…but I guess they know when they have a good design.
